1. Dress Accordingly

Weather conditions at sea can shift unexpectedly so it's vital to layer up. When the sun is shining the breeze and water can add a chill factor while sailing. Opt for drying attire and remember to pack a lightweight jacket or windbreaker. Non-slip shoes with traction are essential for safety when moving around the deck.

2. Grasp the Fundamentals

Prior to setting sail take some time to acquaint yourself with sailing jargon and boat components. Understanding terms like "bow" (the front of the boat) "stern" (the back) "port" (left side) and "starboard" ( side) will enhance your experience. Make it more enjoyable.

3. Pack

Although space aboard a sailboat is limited there are items you should bring along.

Don't forget to pack sunscreen sunglasses with UV protection and a hat to shield yourself from the sun. It's also an idea to bring along a water bottle to stay hydrated. If you're prone to seasickness consider taking motion sickness medication or using acupressure bands.

4. Listen to Your Captain

Listen closely to your captain while on board. They're there to ensure your safety and make sure you have time. Pay attention to their safety instructions and guidance on navigating the boat. Feel free to ask questions if you're curious about sailing – your captain will be more than happy to share their knowledge.

5. Be Prepared for Motion

Prepare yourself for the boat movement if you're new to sailing. The rocking motion is normal. All part of the adventure. To help prevent seasickness focus on the horizon drink plenty of water and avoid eating meals before setting sail.

6. Embrace the Experience

Fully embrace the sailing experience as it's not about reaching your destination but enjoying every moment of the journey. Take some time to relax breathe in the air and soak in the views of Chicago's skyline from Lake Michigan. Whether it's a trip or an all-day adventure allow yourself to fully engage in the experience.

7. Practice Safety First

Remember to prioritize safety when you're out on the water. Familiarize yourself with where the life jackets and other safety gear are stored on the boat. It's important to note that drinking alcohol can impact your coordination and judgment so it's advisable to consume alcohol or refrain until you're safely ashore.
